This past Sunday, October 19th, HPR headed out to Bayboro to re-launch last year’s rocket, GOOSE! Powered by a J500 central motor and H180 cluster motors, GOOSE soared over 3,000 feet into clear skies. We also re-launched last year’s payloads, equipped with a camera, atmospheric sensors, and a magnetic field detector, after weeks of preparation and testing. Over 20 members came out to watch the launch, enjoy the weather, and enjoy Cookout after! HPR can’t wait for our next launch this spring!
At this year's fall launch, six members successfully completed their Level 1 flights, while two others finished building their rockets but couldn't launch due to rising winds. Including Michael Chen's planned relaunch, nine high-powered rockets were built/prepped for this launch. Congrats to Alissa, Casey, Amarachi, Shivani, Nikhil, and Alex on their Level 1 flights!
HPR is excited to have selected it's 25-26 airframe design and payloads!
The rocket will be a Class 2, Level 2 high-powered rocket. The vehicle is designed to test the viability of smokeless powder ejection charges, capture high-resolution flight footage, and collect in-flight acoustic and atmospheric data using custom-built payloads. Powered by a single AeroTech L1420R-PS motor, it is expected to reach an apogee of over 10,000 feet.
The payload bay will integrate high-performance sensing, imaging, and communication systems to collect comprehensive in-flight data, transmit information, and record video footage throughout flight. Payloads include high-SPL microphones, high-definition cameras, atmospheric and position sensors, GPS tracking, and radio communication. These systems will allow the team to analyze flight dynamics, environmental interactions, and structural acoustics to advance future high-power rocketry research.
Aside from planning this year's rocket, HPR has also been busy getting ready for our Fall Launch! We deconstructed and rebuilt GOOSE’s payload, completed the parachute setup, and packed the cluster motors. GOOSE is now prepped and ready for relaunch on October 19th!
Rocketry is excited to be back! Throughout August and September, HPR members have been busy learning OpenRocket, submitting payload and airframe proposals, and learning about the electronics involved in a payload. This year, we plan to focus on member-driven research payloads. Several creative and well-developed proposals have already been submitted. We have also begun prepping last year's rocket, GOOSE, for our upcoming Fall Launch in October!
